Saab Key Replacement
Losing your car keys or lost can be extremely frustrating. It's cheap and easy to get a new car key if you own an extra key.

The car keys are equally easy to copy today as it was ago. The only difference is that modern keys come with an electronic chip within them. These chips provide a good amount of protection against key theft and copying. This does not mean you'll never lose your key.
If you do lose your keys, don't panic! The first thing to examine the areas in which you typically store your keys. You may find them in the pockets of your pants or jacket, or even in the floor just next to your front door. Lockouts
Saab owners should always have a spare key as it's much easier to replace keys that are lost or stolen. If you lose only one key, that's a different issue as it's quite costly to replace it and requires the dealer to install and program a brand new TWICE module (Column Integration Module in earlier vehicles) and a brand new key that is OEM (not from Amazon or eBay).
If you're experiencing issues with your remote control keys not locking or unlocking your car, investigate the possible causes. The most common cause is the battery of the coin that is dead in the key fob but it can also be caused by damaged buttons and water damage, signal interference and problems with the receiver module.
If your problem persists after having checked all of these, you can try reprogramming your ignition key. This is done by changing the number count (in inverse the hex) to zero in the ECU. In order to do this, you need access to the case of your car key fob. The best way to do this is by removing the emergency key from the fob. Once this is done you can use a flathead screwdriver to open the case and expose the battery. Be careful when doing this and avoid pouring or dropping any liquids into the case as they could harm the electronic components inside.

Since 1995 the year 1995, every Saab is required to have an immobilizer on the vehicle. This makes it almost impossible to steal a vehicle without a key. A transponder is required to be incorporated into the key to allow the car to start and unlock doors. The key also needs a transmitter/transponder chip that needs to be matched with the car's computer module in order to work. This can only be done by dealers using a tool known as Tech-2 or other similar software.
It's important to not try to remove the broken key from the ignition or lock. It could damage the lock, and create other issues. The attempt to force a broken key out usually only results in breaking the metal key blade or lock mechanism itself. This can be more expensive than hiring a locksmith to replace the key.
Replacement
Saab owners from 1994 and up are advised to keep two working keys for their vehicle. Replacing one key is costly and difficult. The dealer will need to replace both the CIM (Column Integration module) or TWICE, based on the model. They will also have to program the key in order to work with the new module. Claimed-new keys from aftermarket sellers is usually not properly initialized and therefore cannot be programmed correctly when you are in need of them.
It is not unusual to find the battery inside the key fob to wear out after a couple of years of use, specifically when it is used frequently for locking and unlocking the car. Fortunately, replacing the battery in most SAAB 9-3 key fob models is easy and doesn't require any special tools.

A locksmith will not have to replace the computer in the car either and can usually modify your existing EEPROM to accept the new key.
